What Is CEREC and How Can It Make Your Life More Convenient?

You may have likely heard of dental crowns. You may even have one protecting a tooth currently. Dental crowns are a popular tooth restoration option that protects weakened teeth and can even be used for purely cosmetic purposes. But have you ever heard of CEREC? Patients in the Wrentham, Massachusetts, area are learning about the convenience of CEREC dental crowns in a single visit as offered by Dr. Anshuman Rawat and the team at Advanced Dental Practices.

The Technology of CEREC Same Day Crowns

In the past, if you needed a dental crown, there was no alternative to the standard process of multiple appointments over multiple days and having to wear a temporary crown in between these appointments. For those with busy lives, getting to the dentist once can be an inconvenience, let alone multiple appointments. Thanks to the evolution of dental technology, there is now a convenient alternative to traditional dental crowns.

The CEREC device allows patients to walk in for an appointment and walk out wearing their permanent dental crown, all on the same day (and only a couple of hours from start to finish!). CEREC technology uses a CAD/CAM system. These technologies allow your dental crown to be crafted within a single visit and without the need for a physical mold. Instead, digital mapping technology allows your dentist to take digital images of your mouth and send these images to the CAD/CAM system. These images are incredibly detailed and accurate, allowing the manufacturing of your new dental crown right in your dentist’s office. No off-site lab is needed!

The CEREC Process vs. Traditional Dental Crowns

For many years, getting a dental crown has been a time-consuming process. The process of getting a dental crown involves the following:

  • Receiving an oral exam, after which x-rays and other imaging may be necessary.
  • During the initial appointment, anesthetic is applied to the tooth needing the crown so it can be prepared for the crown.
  • A physical impression of the tooth is taken so that it can be sent to an off-site lab where the crown will be crafted.
  • You will receive a temporary crown and be sent home while the permanent crown is made. This process typically takes one to two weeks.
  • You have to return for the follow-up appointment and have the temporary crown removed and the permanent one placed, after which final adjustments are made for a proper fit.

With CEREC, all these steps are not required. The entire process takes only a single appointment. The crown is crafted in your dentist’s office with state-of-the-art technology, and there is no need for physical impressions or temporary crowns. You walk away with your permanent crown in the same appointment!
