The Importance of Identifying TMJ disorders for treatment in Wrentham, MA

The temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, serves as a sliding axis connecting your jawbone to your skull.

If you believe you are experiencing any issues with your temporomandibular joint, you should give Dr. Rawat and his team at Advanced Dental Practices in Wrentham, MA a call so that you can be checked out.

It can be quite difficult to determine specific causes of a TMJ disorder due there being several possibilities. TMJ disorders can be caused by factors such as genetics or arthritis, among others. There is good news too, though, which includes the fact that most TMJ disorders are temporary and can be treated through self-management and non-invasive, non-surgical methods.

Symptoms

It’s important for you to have a basic understanding of some of the symptoms which could be pointing to a TMJ disorder. The sooner you can recognize a symptom of TMJ, the sooner you can get it looked at and treated. Some symptoms of TMJ include:

  • Pain/Tenderness of the jaw
  • Pain/Tenderness in one or both of your TMJ
  • Aching pain in and around your ear
  • Chewing is difficult and painful
  • Facial pains/aches
  • Difficulty opening and closing your mouth due to the joint locking

You may also be able to identify a TMJ disorder through audible clicking of the jaw or grating sensations when you chew or open your mouth. If there is no pain/discomfort or movement limitations, you can probably take comfort I knowing this is not a TMJ disorder. You should continue to monitor your situation though, just in case.
